About IP Location Mapping

IP location mapping displays the approximate geographic location of an internet-connected device on an interactive map. The underlying data comes from IP geolocation databases that map IP address blocks to the cities, regions, and countries in which they are registered or typically routed. InfoSniper aggregates location data from authoritative sources including DB-IP and IP2Location to produce results in real time.

The interactive map above is centered on the IP address you supplied — or, if you didn't enter one, on your own public IP. The pin marks the latitude and longitude associated with that IP in our geolocation database. Click and drag to pan, scroll to zoom. The map uses Leaflet with OpenStreetMap tiles, so it works smoothly on desktop and mobile.

What IP geolocation can tell you

A single IP address can reveal: country (typically above 99% accuracy), region or state (around 90%), city (55-80% depending on IP type), the ISP responsible for the address block, the autonomous system number (ASN) that routes traffic for the block, the connection type (residential broadband, mobile, business, hosting/datacenter), and a user-type classification.

What IP geolocation cannot tell you

IP addresses don't carry street addresses or personally identifiable information. Geolocation databases work from network registration records — they know where the IP block is administered, not where any specific user is physically located. Mobile carrier IPs often resolve to the carrier's regional hub rather than the device's actual location. Corporate IPs frequently appear at the company's headquarters regardless of where the employee is working. VPN, Tor, and proxy users appear at the exit node, not their real location.

Common use cases

Security operations: investigate the origin of login attempts, web traffic spikes, or abusive activity. Plotting source IPs on a map quickly reveals geographic patterns — coordinated attacks often cluster in specific regions.

Marketing analytics: understand where website visitors come from at a city or country level for content localization, ad targeting, and market validation.

Compliance and fraud prevention: verify that user-claimed locations match the IP's apparent origin. Useful for KYC checks, payment fraud screening, and regulatory compliance with region-restricted services.

Network administration: correlate IP addresses with ASN ownership to investigate routing issues, peering relationships, or shadow IT on a corporate network.

Need bulk or programmatic access?

If you need to look up IPs at scale, our JSON and XML API returns the same data programmatically. A free tier is available, and paid plans cover higher request volumes. For one-off batch lookups, use bulk upload — paste up to 10,000 addresses and download geolocation results as CSV. For threat intelligence layered on top of geolocation, see the IP reputation checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IP location mapping?
IP location mapping plots the approximate geographic location of an IP address on an interactive map. The data is derived from geolocation databases that correlate IP address blocks with the city, region, and country in which they have been registered or typically operate.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country-level accuracy is typically above 99%. City-level accuracy ranges from 55-80% depending on the IP type. Residential broadband IPs usually resolve to city level; mobile and corporate IPs often resolve to the ISP headquarters rather than the end user's location.
Can IP geolocation find someone's exact street address?
No. IP geolocation returns the city, region, and country associated with the IP block, not a street address or personal identity. Exact addresses require legal process directed at the ISP and are not available through public geolocation tools.
Does the IP location map work for IPv6 addresses?
Yes. Both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are supported. Enter either format in the lookup field above.
How do I embed this IP location map on my own site?
Visit our widget page for iframe embed code. Multiple sizes are available — full map, mini map, IP-to-country, IP-to-city, world map — and the widget is free to use on any site.
